Trans-Himalayan Expedition

Julley! Upon landing at 11,500 ft, your only job is to breathe. We cannot stress enough how vital this first day is for preventing Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). Check into your hotel and spend the entire day resting. Avoid the temptation to explore; let your lungs adjust to the thin Himalayan air. Sip on local ginger- lemon-honey tea and stay hydrated. If you feel 100% fit by evening, a very gentle stroll to the local Main Bazaar and the town.

Expert Tip: Avoid caffeine and alcohol today; stick to garlic soup, a local remedy for altitude. 

We head west today, following the emerald Indus River. Our first stop is the "Gravity Defying" Magnetic Hill and the breathtaking Sangam—the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. You’ll witness two distinct colors merging into one. Along the way we can visit the Pathar sahib Gurudwara, and on the return we can visit the Spituk Monastery, which overlooks the KBR airport Leh.

Today, we conquer the legendary Khardung La, once touted as the world's highest motorable pass (17,582 ft). Descending into the Nubra Valley, the landscape transforms into a high-altitude desert. We’ll visit the 106-ft Maitreya Buddha at Diskit, overlooking the valley floor. We end our day at the Hunder Sand Dunes. Here, you can ride the rare, double-humped Bactrian camels—a legacy of the ancient Silk Road—as the sun sets behind the Karakoram Range.

We drive to the northernmost edge of India. Turtuk, a village that was part of Pakistan until 1971, offers a unique Balti culture. The people here speak a different dialect and the architecture is distinctively stone- based. We continue to Thang, the very last village on the Line of Control (LoC). Standing here, you can see Pakistani army posts across the valley. The apricot orchards and the hospitality of the Balti people make this one of the most heartwarming days of the trip.

We take the adventurous "direct" route to Pangong Lake via the Shyok River road. This route avoids a long detour back to Leh. As you round the final bend, the first glimpse of the 134 km long Pangong Tso will take your breath away. The lake, shared between India and China, is famous for changing colors—from turquoise to deep indigo—throughout the day. We’ll stay in a camp near the shore to witness the stars reflecting in the crystalline waters.

We travel through the vast, open plains of the Changthang plateau toward Hanle. This is the wild frontier of Ladakh, where you’re more likely to see wildlife than humans. We stop at the Rezang La War Memorial to honor the 114 soldiers who fought to the last man in 1962. Hanle is a tiny village in a wide valley, dominated by a 17th-century monastery. It is also home to one of the world's highest astronomical observatories due to its exceptionally clear skies.

Distance: 170 km | Duration: 8 hours driving. 

We drive across the high-altitude desert of Changthang to Tso Moriri. Unlike Pangong, this is a freshwater lake and a protected Ramsar site. You’ll likely see the Kyung (Tibetan Wild Ass) galloping across the plains. We reach Korzok, one of the highest permanent human settlements in the world, located right on the lake’s edge. The deep blue of Tso Moriri, contrasted with the snow-capped peaks of the Gya and Chamser Kangri, is a sight you’ll never forget.

Distance: 160 km | Duration: 6 hours driving. 

Depart Tsomoriri early, heading toward Sumdo. Stop at Puga Valley to witness rare geothermal hot springs and sulfur deposits. Continue to Mahe Bridge, joining the Indus River valley. Pause at Chumathang for its famous boiling hot springs by the river. Drive through Upshi and Karu, reaching Leh by evening after a scenic journey through the high-altitude plateau.

After an early breakfast, we’ll transfer you to the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport. As you fly out, look out the window—you’ll be able to spot the peaks and valleys you’ve just explored. You leave Ladakh not just with photos, but with the "Mountain Spirit" in your heart. Julley!
